MOOD BOARD: GOODFELLAS
Recently I've been working on a capsule mens collection for Winter 2011. It's mainly an exercise in updating my folio, and I hope to have it ready early in the new year.
Though, since getting samples made is proving nearly impossible with the Christmas break approaching, I thought I'd post a few things that I've got on my mood board for next season. I'll try get around to posting a little on each theme in due course.
Earlier this year Men's Style posted a feature on the fabulous shirts from 1990 American gangster film Goodfellas, which left quite a strong impression. How awesome are the long, fanged collars? Vampire mafioso chic.

GOLDEN BOY
Memorable Comme Des Garcons SS07 editorial from Arena Homme Plus, Summer Autumn 2007 issue.
What's genius about this is the intentionally shit catalogue-style layout and graphics. It just looks so god-damn EURO! This could have come from a German mail-order catalogue, or boy band magazine from the late 80s.
Also the quotes are pretty special: e.g. 'The intention is to make gold the colour of the season', and 'Gold is the colour of the catholic church'.

SCANDALOUS
LE JUSTE MILIEU DE LA MODE
Paris Vogue, February 1981
Photography: Guy Bourdin
February 1981 was quite a month for fashion, at least judging by that month's Vogue Paris. This Guy Bourdin editorial is just too much. From the mid-to-late 70's through to the early 80's, photo shoots often resembled stills from a movie. The composition of these images brings to mind elements of film noir with strong elements of mis-en-scene. And the voyeuristic ladies in the last two spreads are pure evil. Whatever happened to a bit of drama, story telling and creativity in editorials?

RAF SIMONS SS02
I've been on quite the vintage Raf trip today.
In part caused by stumbling upon an impressive collection of Raf Simons archive pieces for sale at LN-CC (i'll take the Manics Camo Jacket from FW01, thank you very much) , and partly due to procrastinating doing designs for my Winter range.
Raf's SS02 collection, as well as a lot of his other early work, is inspired genius. Entitled 'Woe Onto Those Who Spit On The Fear Generation...The Wind Will Blow It Back', it's a call to arms, an anarchist manifesto of sorts. The colour palette is exclusively white, red and black, with each model's face obscured by cloths resembling arab kaffiyehs - a pretty bold statement in a post 9/11 world.
There's a great, comprehensive, season by season summary of Raf's impressive 15 year career at Hapsical, check it out. I wonder if there's much left that's worth saying with menswear.

THE ART & CRAFT OF GIANNI VERSACE
This was the first addition to our now extensive Gianni Versace collection. It was published to coincide with the opening of the exhibition 'Versace at the V & A' (2002-2003) and is a celebration of the most iconic pieces from his entire career. It's a special book if you're into design because it's all about the pieces: the construction and finish, the trims, the hardware, the attention to detail.
Again, it's a pretty clear reminder of how ahead of his time he was. The early 90s revivalists of the last couple of years have a lot to thank this man for.
